Too many good ones to count, but there are a few I think everybody should see:

Seven Samurai -- A rather old movie (1957) and subtitled, but nonetheless it is one of the best of all time. It's a story of honor and hopelessness, set in feudal japan and is about the last attempts of a village's farmers to save them from the roaming bandit clan.

City of God -- Set in Brazil, this story covers the lives of a group of boys growing up in the ghettos of rio di janeiro, as they become gangsters and eventually crime lords. Outstandingly well made movie, with very good characters and a great soundtrack. Based on a true story.

Lost Highway -- One of David Lynch's best works (director of Blue Velvet, Dune, Eraserhead...). There is not much I can say about this movie without ruining it, but I will tell you it's one you're going to want to watch twice. It is an incredible movie to say the least, and I guarentee it will blow your mind away. Just be sure to watch the widescreen version if you can find it, as the only version available in North America is Pan & Scan which really ruins the mood of the movie (cuts out a lot of details).

Run, Lola, Run -- A german movie about a determined girl, Lola, who will stop at nothing to save her boyfriend Manni. The movie is centered around Lola running to save Manni, and shows with different timelines how they affect not only their outcome but the lives of those whose paths she crosses. Not the best movie out there, but certainly worth the 90 minutes of the thumping techno soundtrack.

Amercian History X -- A former skin head is released from jail after reforming his outlook on humanity, only to find that his younger brother is neck deep in the same gang he tried desperately to seperate himself from. A truly tragic movie.

Memento -- The story centers around a man that suffers from not being able to form any new memories. He is driven to find and punish his wife's murderer, but the only clues he has is what he's written down or tattoed on his body. A rather strange movie, as it starts at the very end and slowly traces it's way back through his memories.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind -- I figured with all these depressing movies I listed, there might as well be one love story. This movie suprised me in every aspect -- mostly by how good Jim Carrey played a serious role. The story is based around Carrey's tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend Clementine. After a hurtful breakup, she elects to undergo a procedure to have Carrey erased from her memory. After finding out, a distraught Carrey elects to have the same procedure performed, only to realize after it's underway that he is not ready to let go of her, and struggles through his dreams to cling to any single memory of her he can.

Nowadays there isn't much I like on TV, but I still enjoy most of the Adult Swim lineup (esp. Metalocalypse and Squidbillies), Doctor Who (past and present), and sitcom-wise I enjoy NBC's Scrubs.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig
One of my favorite novels. Goes through a man's internal discussions about the principles of existence (explained through his interactions with everyday life, and his recollections of his previous life before sufferring a breakdown), as he is slowly reallizing his is going insane. It is a truly chilling novel, and a very interesting read.

The Don Quixote series by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
Follows the life of a researched that meets a wise man in the southwest deserts of North America. The man is taken on as an apprentice, and learns the ancient wisdoms of life. It's a truly strange series that always makes you wonder if it is real or not. The author even claimed that he found the original story in a diary, and translated it from arabic.

Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse
Written as a sort of self portrait during his own rough times, this Hesse novel outlines the struggles of a man with his thoughts of existentalism and contemplations of suicide. Not a bad movie, either.
